Dell Anderson, Executive Director of Renew Behavioral Health and Wellness in Grant County in Washington State, shares insights from using PuMP to support Renew’s ambitious vision to become a “model of excellence”.
Dell Anderson has led an evidence-based approach with his leadership team in Renew, to pursue a bold vision of transforming a behavioural health and wellness organisation that wasn’t even recognised in its community as health experts, into one that is a model of excellence. Dell agreed to the suggestion from PuMP Affiliate Kathy Letendre to try the Evidence-Based Leadership approach of PuMP.
Dell started by reading Prove It!, the Evidence-Based Leadership book, and was sold.
In this case study, Dell and Kathy describe how they used PuMP’s Evidence-Based Leadership approach to support Renew’s transformation in pursuit of performance excellence:
- Bringing a new leadership team together around an evidence-based strategy.
- Making the vision, mission and values measurable and understandable to everyone.
- Engaging the organisation to connect with and contribute to the strategy.
- The impacts achieved so far, both culturally and measurably.
- What Dell would do differently, if he started over again.
One of the uniquely interesting things about this case study is hearing the journey described from two different perspectives. Firstly, we hear Dell’s perspective, as Renew’s leader and with no prior PuMP experience. Secondly, we hear Kathy’s perspective, as a PuMP expert facilitating its implementation.
“I believe that PuMP is worth it. I believe that this is an add-on to fact-based leadership. I think that it takes fact-based leadership just to another level. And is a way that you can really communicate across your system how well you’re doing as an organization, what processes need to be improved, to continue on this journey of excellence.”
– Dell Anderson, Executive Director, Renew
“Dell says it so, well. I mean, to aspire to excellence, one has to be able to measure and improve. This lens is about continuous improvement and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to do this. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to utilize PuMP with Renew. They have been an amazing first partner in this because they believe so much that their clients and their communities deserve nothing but excellence.”
