Strategy Alignment & Execution

Get measurable results from every team with expert PuMP Facilitation.

The PuMP Implementer Program is expertly facilitated by one of our global licensed PuMP Partners or Contractors, to guide strategy implementation, team by team, with a process that is practical, results-oriented, and builds internal capability in strategy execution and performance improvement.

Get people owning and executing your strategy.

Naturally, most leaders want every team to implement and help achieve the organisation’s strategy. And with the right strategy execution approach, two tremendous shifts are noticeable:

  1. Teams achieve larger and higher-return performance improvements with the strategy budget.
  2. Leaders feel transformed from overwhelmed Task Masters into Strategy Execution Masters (and everyone else notices this, too).

But these shifts rarely happen because strategy execution fails 60-80% of the time!

Do you have these strategy execution problems, too?

Every organisation faces common problems causing strategy execution to fail so often:

  • Strategy isn’t clear enough for people to translate into their own context.
  • Communication of strategy is one-way, constraining everyone’s understanding.
  • Teams struggle to align day-to-day work to strategy, limited by silo thinking.
  • Leadership stays at the top, rather than directly supporting teams in execution.
  • Performance measures are action-oriented, giving no results feedback.
  • Fear of accountability for hitting targets prevents ownership of improving results.
  • Alignment of projects to strategy is too focused on budgets rather than results.
  • Change management and buy-in is ignored and leaves people feeling lost.

These problems create a strategy-execution gap. It can swallow 80% of strategies, dooming their implementation to failure.

Don’t end up part of the 60-80% that fail…

When strategy isn’t implemented well, or at all, it means budgets are spent but don’t get the right results. No leader wants to be seen as a leader who cannot manage for results, who cannot turn their budgets into large, lasting, meaningful improvements.

And yet, no leader has to fall victim to the strategy-execution gap. Every leader can make sure their teams achieve results.

What’s needed is a bridge across the strategy-execution gap.

PuMP bridges the strategy-execution gap.

PuMP is a strategy execution process that bridges the strategy-execution gap. It does this in a practical way, team by team.

PuMP fixes the biggest problems causing strategy execution to fail. PuMP provides the how-to to make sure that:

  • Everyone understands and is quickly inspired by the strategy because it is clear both verbally and visually.
  • Teams easily align to strategy when they focus on continuous improvement of their processes to reach targets.
  • Change management and buy-in is designed into the team-based processes to set goals, KPIs, targets and actions.
  • Goals are measured with result-oriented measures, easily designed with simple but powerful techniques and templates.
  • Accountability is redefined to drive ownership of results and improvement, rather than fear of missing targets.
  • Alignment of the team to strategy is linked by the cause-effect contribution of their goals and measures, through to the organisation’s goals and measures.

The PuMP Implementer Program is how each team is expertly facilitated through the steps of strategy execution, with PuMP.

It’s the perfect approach for each team to align, measure, monitor, and improve the results they contribute to achieving the organisation’s strategy.

“I was first introduced to Stacey’s PuMP philosophy almost 20 years ago when I was in local government and we were struggling to understand our progress towards achieving our corporate and strategic outcomes. PuMP is simple, logical and so effective that my team and I used it in the development of all our corporate strategies at GCCC and it is still used there today.”

Stephen Varady, ARA Director and Chairman of Award Committee, Australasian Reporting Awards, Australia

“I was able to simultaneously run seven PuMP programs with each of the city’s departments. Of course, there is much work left to be done, and a lot of change needs to be managed, but at least the path forward is clear and PuMP has provided us a foundation upon which I can help build a performance culture in my town’s government.”

Trevor Hobbs, Assistant to the Town Administrator, Town of Farragut, Tennessee, United States

“I regularly use PuMP terminology and logic in my day-to-day mahi… Being taught to apply what is best fitting for your environment was great and means we can have the critical conversations needed, rather than it being seen as an inflexible end to end process which is hard to get stakeholders to buy into.”

Matt Moloney, Senior Advisor, Ministry of Social Development, Wellington New Zealand

PuMP works because it’s evidence based.

Meaningful measurement is at the heart of PuMP.

Like you, we care about results. And the only way to tangibly understand the results we want, and achieve them, is for proper measurement to guide strategy execution.

We also know how hard it is to get teams fully engaged and owning the results and measures crucial to implementing strategy.

So, in developing the PuMP Implementer Program we made each step illuminating, inspiring, practical, and collaborative, to build buy-in and ownership from the start.

PuMP has proven this over 30 years:

  • Clients achieve high ROI with use of PuMP, such as Steve Silvers’ team  getting a 40x ROI after saving over $500,000 in an FAA flight controller training process.
  • PuMP is used in a diverse array of industries: administration, aerospace, banking/finance, defence, education, health, local government, natural resources, primary industries, technology, transport, travel, utilities.
  • PuMP is used in all sectors, at least 90 countries around the world.
  • PuMP is used in all levels of government and many non-profit organisations too.
  • We have many thousands of trained PuMP practitioners in over 900 organisations around the world.
  • PuMP graduates have rated its overall value of at 8.6 out of 10 and their likelihood to recommend PuMP to colleagues is 8.9 out of 10.

It will take more time, though…

Because PuMP is not a simplistic framework, because it’s built with practical detail, and challenges a lot of habits that need to be unlearned, it takes time, at first.

This initial learning curve will, quite quickly, reward every team with much more time to focus on what really matters, with less rework and distraction than ever before.

“We are starting to shift the culture a little bit around performance measures and particularly around business planning to actually, can you measure that? Is that real? That’s actually been really valuable. And I guess the way I look at it is that all of PuMP is so logical and it makes so much sense, but you wouldn’t have thought of it yourself.”

Mark Dungey, SQNLDR, RAAF, Australia

“It was taking on average 64 days to place training failures in new positions, and the Directors asked us if we could get that down to around 14 days. We used PuMP to help us do that. We invested probably $10,000-$12,000 and got back close to a $500,000 gain. And there are also the intangibles, like the Union is happy now, the managers are happy and the actual employee who is being impacted can get their life back on track.”

Steve Silvers, Federal Aviation Administration, United States

About PuMP’s creator, Stacey Barr

Stacey Barr is an evidence-based leadership and organisational performance measurement specialist. She is the creator of PuMP and all its programs, host of PuMP Academy, and author of two booksPractical Performance Measurement and Prove It!

Stacey created PuMP in the 1990s, when she worked in the corporate world, to overcome her own struggles with how to measure performance.

Since then, Stacey discovered that her struggles were common for almost everyone else, regardless of their sector, industry or country. And PuMP quickly became a world-renowned methodology for practical and meaningful performance measurement.

She is known especially for her practicality, and the way she takes abstract concepts like measurement and makes them clear, logical, engaging, and easy to apply.
